About

The School of Literatures, Cultural Studies, and Linguistics at UIC organizes the annual In/Between Conference in an effort to initiate conversations about issues of interest to us as humanists, to share our current research, and to foster a sense of shared intellectual community.

Russian radio tuner

The image of the radio tuner on our conference homepage is courtesy of Andrew Gustafson. For us he modified a photograph of a Soviet-era radio by translating the names of major world cities and lesser-known Soviet Bloc cities written on the tuner from Russian into English. The radio tuner serves as an apt metaphor for the main themes of this year’s In/Between Conference, namely the investigation of sound (music, noise, speech) as a medium of communication, and an instrument for shaping and preserving cultural communities across the globe. Please visit Andrew’s website to view the original photograph.
